Leadership Development

At Greensboro College we believe that every individual is capable of leadership, whether through a significant role in campus life or a single act of leadership. The leadership development program on campus has been molded out of four basic assumptions:

  1. Students can continuously hone their leadership gifts and talents and can develop new leadership skills and perspectives, putting them in a unique position to exceed at job interviews and in chosen career fields.
  2. Leadership skills and perspectives are developed from a variety of challenging experiences.
  3. Most of the experiences necessary to develop leadership skills and perspectives are naturally occurring during the course of an undergraduates time engaged on campus.
  4. Leadership development, properly understood and practiced, is personal development.

It is with this philosophy in mind and the belief that individuals must experience leadership opportunities and reflect upon these experiences in order to experience growth that the following leadership opportunities are made available to our students:

Certificate in Leadership Program

This is the College’s signature leadership program. It is a two to three year program uniting academic development with extra-curricular and life experiences. Participating students must have completed English 1120 and be in good academic standing. Participants complete four recommended academic courses, participate in regular mentoring, group processing opportunities, and critically reflect on these experiences.

Individual Leadership Consultation

This service is available through the office of Student Development for any group of students (student organizations, athletic teams, theatre productions, etc.) or individual students needing guidance and direction in meeting specific goals or resolving specific leadership issues.

Inter-Club Council Honorary

ICCH is a long established organization on campus which serves to recognize exemplary student leaders both through membership and through two campus events; the Student Leader Appreciation Luncheon in the Fall and the Leadership Awards Convocation in the Spring.

Leadership Focused First-Year Seminar

This is a sixteen-week course offered in the fall semester for freshmen as a section of the First-Year Seminar program strongly recommended for every student.  Freshmen are invited to participate in this program regardless of prior leadership experience. The focus of the course is to help students develop skills as effective leaders and gain confidence in their abilities. Experiential activities, group discussions and varied presentations compose the program.

Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK)

As a national leadership honorary, members of ODK are expected to be in the top third of their class academically, are to be of exemplary character, and should model exceptional leadership skills. Around the nation ODK is widely respected for its leadership institutes, community outreach and critical campus programming. Currently, the circle at Greensboro College is dormant, but the College is exploring opportunities to revive the group.

Resource Library

The library is housed at Royce Reynolds Family Student Life Center and contains leadership-related materials to assist students and organizations with specific issues and topics. The materials include activities and lectures for training workshops and simulation games for learning about ethics, multiculturalism and power.

Summer Experiences

The College supports and advocates for the opportunity for its students to participate in summer leadership institutes throughout the nation. In past years, students have participated in LEADERSHAPE and summer institutes in their major fields of study.

Workshops

The College periodically offers leadership symposia on critical topics related to student leadership development. The College also takes advantage of opportunities to bring leaders together from area colleges and universities to explore issues of campus leadership. In addition, the College sponsors student attendance at local, state and national leadership conferences when the opportunity arises.
