Department of Education

Education is, of course, an extremely rewarding field. An effective educator can be an active part of making a child's future brighter. What could be more rewarding than that?

Our programs are designed to provide future teachers with the knowledge and understanding of how children develop and learn as they grow. Coupled with innovative and progressive teaching methods and plenty of clinical experience, our students can truly become teachers who really do make a difference.

Teacher Licensure

Within the Department of Education, there are five distinct majors with teacher licensure: B-K Education, Elementary Education K-6, Middle Grades Education 6-9, Secondary Comprehensive Science Education and Special Education (General and Adapted).

In addition to those core majors with licensure, teacher licensure programs for secondary education are available in the following majors: Art, Biology, English, History, and Theatre.

All students seeking teacher licensure in one of the areas listed above must fulfill the requirements listed in the Education Curriculum. (link at right)

The Education Curriculum also contains basic information about the Teacher Education Program. For more specific information on that program, please consult the Teacher Education Program website.

For information regarding specific licensure/curriculum requirements of specific licensure areas, please consult the appropriate department page via the Academics homepage.

Our department is special because...

  • Not only do we model best practices in the college classroom, but our students also spend many hours in the classroom prior to their semester long teaching experience. Clinical experience is a strength. Our students are ready to teach when they finish.
  • Our faculty are both strong and caring and provide active learning opportunities, present both theory and practice, and have a proven track record in preparing students to become outstanding teachers.
  • In elementary education we have a 100% passing rate on the PRAXIS II exam required for licensure.
